Metamorphosis
“As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from his uneasy dreams, he found himself transformed into a giant insect.” – Franz Kafka, Metamorphosis
With this project, I want to create a series of portraits on the theme of “metamorphosis”. It is about staging, through painting creating fictional portraits. The purpose of this contribution is to explore how a series of portraits could be an attempt to visually depict what a transformation or metamorphosis could look like. Is it possible to approach both the play and the seriousness of the idea of becoming someone else for a while? And what does the viewer see and interpret in these images, does a second image arise where the viewer sees their own context, memories, and references? – Who am I when you are you?
The portraits will act, like a mirror, as a conversation with everyone and anyone to show how a change can be shaped. In the long run, it could lead to a way of understanding one’s own role just as much the understanding of others.
My project is process oriented and the material is paint on canvas.
