WE’VE BEEN HAVING COMMITMENT ISSUES
WE’VE BEEN HAVING COMMITMENT ISSUES is a comic exploring how we can strengthen our relationship with the clothes we already own as a way to lessen the amount of textile waste produced each year. Through colorful and humoristic storytelling the project invites the reader to learn about what they can change about their clothing consumption to create a better tomorrow.
Our relationship with clothing has become increasingly shallow in the past decades. We can simply buy a new garment if the old one isn’t providing what we need from it. With new trends being pushed each month, stores overflowing with clothes and the prices just getting lower we are incentivized by the fast fashion industry to simply buy more and new without any reflection. This made me want to find out:
How can I inspire young people to focus on using the clothes in their wardrobes over buying new?
By gathering information about what reasons people feel frustrated with their clothes or make them stop using them altogether and packaging them through the format of couples therapy my project was born. Through the character of the clothing therapist the reader is pulled into a magical world where clothes are able to voice their woes with how they are being treated by their owner. Listen in to three couples and their problems, what caused these problems to begin with and what can be done to help them come back from it.
The fact that we are consuming too much clothes at an alarming speed is not a secret, it has been talked about in every way, shape and form. However, this reality can be a hard one to face, especially if it reflects one’s own habits. Therefore I thought, why not make the comic both entertaining and educational as a way to make a hard pill to swallow easy to digest.
