RePlace – A new furniture reuse service and more for students!
RePlace is a campus-based sustainability initiative that offers students a structured system for rescuing, repairing, and redistributing discarded furniture. The project addresses the recurring issue of furniture waste caused by student move-ins and move-outs and challenges the growing culture of disposability tied to fast furniture. RePlace also aims to foster emotional connection between people and their possessions through creative repair workshops, encouraging a shift toward circular consumption habits. At its core, RePlace is about community, care, and reimagining how we value everyday objects.
RePlace was developed in response to a recurring issue on campus: perfectly usable furniture abandoned due to short-term student housing and a lack of reuse infrastructure. The project demonstrates that sustainability doesn’t have to be complex—it can be practical, community-driven, and even joyful. RePlace combines a permanent drop-off and pick-up system for discarded furniture with hands-on repair and redesign workshops. These spaces not only extend the life of objects but also foster emotional connections, creativity, and collaboration. The response revealed how quickly people connect—with each other and with furniture—when provided with tools, time, and support.
The project highlights that circularity goes beyond materials; it is rooted in relationships, responsibility, and rethinking how value is assigned to everyday things. Participant feedback confirmed that there is a strong desire to repair, share, and take part in sustainable practices—what’s needed is access and encouragement. RePlace is envisioned not only as a local initiative but as a scalable model that could inspire new ways for institutions to address furniture waste and enhance student engagement. It also serves as an example of how design, when grounded in care and community, can lead to lasting, meaningful impact.
