Moving away from the 24/7 – An independent design project about light pollution
I have worked as a communicator and consultant with the topic of light pollution in a small town on the coast of Finland during this independent design project. I collaborated with the city planners and local photographers to create discussion around the topic of light pollution, while trying to find ways to reduce it locally. The project resulted in a design proposal for the town hall on how to implement facade lighting without introducing even more light pollution.
Light pollution is something that affects everything on this planet, not only humans but animals and the whole ecosystem as well.
During this project I also created a guide that can be used for future development with the aim of reducing light pollution. While working with the facade lighting project I also created a prototype of a mobile light experimentation tool. This tool was used as a way to move from technical specifications on a spreadsheet, to actually seeing how different lighting works on facades. Photography and image manipulation was used as a helpful tool to get an understanding of “what is” and also “what if”.
The facade lighting project will continue in this town and a seed for change on how to deal with light pollution has been planted.
Feel free to contact me for consultation work or to learn more about this local project.
