#GoalsStories – How social norms are portrayed by female influencers and its effect on young women
The meaning of goals, used in hashtags or in comments such as “body goals”, have become a term to desire someone’s fashion style, body shape, relationship etc. It is also a word highly connected to the profession of being an influencer. Together with the app WeStandApp we created GoalsStories; a community for young women to share stories about the struggle for perfection and trying to live up to unattainable Instagram goals.
The project also questions the patriarchal and capitalists society that benefits from women spending time and money on their bodies and appearance. Even though the influencer profession is dominated by women, why does it make us feel like shit? And why are the influencers with the most followers all white, thin, heterosexual, able-bodied and successful? If these are the role models of today, then what does that say about the society we live in?
